Our chairman
of the Working group IFLA-Africa Robert M. Kariuki visited Ndjamena
Chad from the 8th to 11th September 99 and specifically, Batir Chad
Expo 99.
The Expo 99 had been organised entirely by students from Ecole African
des Metiers de L'Architecture et de L'Urbanisme (EAMAU) with limited
support from the government of Chad.
The EAMAU is a regional school established in 1995 and currently
trains students from the following francophone countries:
Benin
Burkina Faso
Cameroon
Central African Republic
Cote D'Ivoire
Gabon
Niger
Togo
The exhibition
appears to be in a very low key and the standard of work presented
was poor. This could possibly be as a result of the general organisation
and resources available to the students and the two local architects
that participated. On the whole Robert Kariuki was impressed by
the students commitment to urban settlement issues of their respective
countries and the zeal and the will of the co-ordinator Mr. Senoussi
Amat Senoussi, who is a fourth year student of architecture at EAMAU.
From the discussions with Mr. S. A. Senoussi it appeared that EAMAU
could be the right institution to approach for IFLA's intended purpose
of initiating a Landscape Architecture curriculum.

Robert Kariuki
had official meetings with two ministers of Chad. First with Hon.
Dr. Adoum Goudja , Ministre de L'Enseignement Superieur et de Recherché
Scientifique. The meeting was organised by Director General, of
Societe Industrielle Agro-Pastorale du Tchad Mr. Ahmed Senoussi
Wadak, who is Mr. Senoussis's father.
The second meeting was with Hon. Ahmed Lamine Ali, Ministere des
Travaux Public, de Transport, de L'urbanisme et de L'habitat
Both ministers welcomed the initiative for IFLA's desire to initiate
Landscape Architecture training in the country , though there is
a lack of manpower for this specialised area of training. It was
agreed, due to the interest for IFLA and the Government of Chad,
to have further meetings outlining each party's commitment. Such
meetings would be necessary in order to officially discuss with
the government mordarlities related to the establishment of our
programme as well as outlining our intended assistance.
